Prior to this, the local school (known as the Grange with registers dating back to 1857) was located down in the Black Hills. The school was quite old and had around sixty pupils.

Upon moving to the current site, there was only one building and the yard was divided into two so the girls and boys wouldn't play together. When the school got some funding it was decided to knock down the wall that was keeping the pupils apart and an additional classroom was added, along with a grass area.

In October 1960 a two day strike was staged by the pupils of Milverton School to highlight to the Department of Education the need to improve the school building. Parents felt that the school was unsafe, classrooms overcrowded and that there where no sanitary conditions, all this causing a lot of ill health to the children.

In March 1961 questions were raised in Dail Eireann by Mr Dan Desmond, Labour Party to the then Minister for Education Dr Patrick Hillery, Fianna Fail regarding the proposed extension and restruction of Milverton Primary School. See link below for further details.
